Michelle’s MO is not about coping - it's about healing. Although you are learning new coping skills as you are healing, her hope is that you will learn to thrive. Someone once said that going to therapy is like having someone draw back a huge stage curtain, and all of a sudden you can see new possibilities and perspectives. If that resonates with you, then you have come to the right place. Michelle provides a non-judgemental space and a supportive ear to help you to cope with whatever you are going through right now. She offers a free 15 minutes phone consultation to see if she is a good fit for you and is looking forward to helping you in your journey.

Mental Health Concerns

Michelle specialized in trauma, specifically in domestic violence during the 5 years that she worked as a mental health therapist at Discovery House. It was there that she understood what it means to stand beside someone, witness their pain and loss, and instill hope for healing. Often, the trauma starts way back in childhood. Sometimes it's overt and recognizable. At other times, it's covert such as through emotional neglect. Michelle has been through her own share of both which is why she can identify with people who are hurting. She has also worked as a bereavement counsellor with AHS and helped to co-facilitate grief groups, where she was able to witness the transformation in grieving people simply through the connection with others who had a similar lived experience.

Counselling Approaches

Michelle trained in Basic ART in the summer of 2017 and in Advanced ART in 2019. She carries the title: Advanced ART Practitioner. It is astounding how quickly ART can work to heal traumatic memories and their triggers. One client recently commented that she felt her brain had been through the washer and reset. In other cases, she likes to work with Internal Family Systems. IFS does a profound job of getting into the nooks and crannies. Since IFS has become so popular, she has had a number of clients coming to her requesting specifically IFS treatment. Clients often experience healing from deep, childhood wounds. Michelle has been practicing IFS for the last year and took her training with Frank Anderson. However, her best learning came from going to an IFS Practitioner for her own therapy which she did regularly for 6 months. Both ART and IFS facilitate memory reconsolidation, which allows for new neural networks to be established. The memories are still there, but they lose their sting and power. She was trained in ACT Basic and ACT for Trauma in 2019 and 2020 by Psychwire, in DBT in 2018 with Jack Hirose Institute and in Core Skills of CBT with the Feeling Good Institute from Dr. David Burns in 2023. Because she specializes in trauma, she utilizes both bottom-up as well as the cognitive top-down approaches for best results, as trauma is both stored in our bodies as sensations and remains in our minds as the stories we tell ourselves.
