What Can Therapy Help With?

When we feel good about ourselves, it’s easier to succeed in life. We feel more confident, less likely to give up when things get tough, and more willing to take risks. This means that having good self-esteem makes us more likely to achieve our goals and is an essential part of being happy and healthy.  Counselling can help you deal with any negative emotions or situations that might be holding you back from feeling good about yourself. Self esteem issues are often rooted in negative and harmful self talk that fall within one of the following categories.

Self Blame

People who blame themselves for situations that are outside of their control will often experience issues with self esteem. Counselling can help you alleviate guilt, forgive yourself, and challenge the thoughts that make you feel bad about yourself.

Catastrophizing

By expecting the worst outcome in every situation, individuals put themselves in a constant state of hyper-vigilance and cynicism. Our counsellors can help you learn how to think about situations differently so that you can approach them with more optimism and less worry.

Denial & Imposter Syndrome

Refusing to believe that successes are honestly deserved, as well as imposter syndrome are commonly associated with low self esteem. Counselling can help you see the truth about yourself and your achievements. This will make all the difference in how you feel about yourself.

Polarization

Individuals who see the world as black and white, good or bad, tend to interpret one event as having excessively large consequences. Counselling will help you learn how to look at situations more objectively and develop a more flexible view of the world to recognize grey areas.
Passive anger self esteem

Projecting

Projecting happens when an individual assumes a harmless interaction is a sign of disapproval. Counselling can help you process these feelings and focus on the facts rather than assumptions. It will help you build confidence in yourself and improve your relationships with others.

Rehashing

Some people rehash old scenarios in order to analyze their mistakes or continue to punish themselves. Counselling can help you process what happened and move forward. It can also help you develop new skills that will make it easier for you to stay positive when faced with similar situations.

Body Image Issues

Body image issues can be a big problem for people, especially when they're young. Social media and television is full of unrealistic ideals, and it's easy to feel like you're not good enough. Everyone is different, so there are no right or wrong ways to look or feel about yourself. When we compare ourselves to others, we're missing out on the opportunity to appreciate ourselves exactly as we are. Counselling is a great way to get support when dealing with body image issues. It focuses on learning how to find happiness within yourself so that you can live the life you want without feeling bad about your body.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Most people have something in their appearance that they don’t like - a bump on the nose, a beauty mark, or their height. Although we all worry about our imperfections, it doesn’t affect our day to day life. In contrast, people with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) experience extreme emotional distress about their appearance. It impacts their ability to socialize and go to work or school which often causes them to become isolated.

What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental illness that causes people to have an obsessive preoccupation with a perceived flaw in their appearance. It's most commonly seen in teens and young adults. It can be difficult to diagnose because it looks like other disorders, such as anxiety or depression.

Counselling for Body Dysmorphic Disorder

If you have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. You may be so consumed by thoughts of what your body looks like that it feels like you're drowning in a sea of negative thoughts and feelings. Counselling can help you learn how to manage those thoughts and feelings, as well as change the way you think about your body. It can also help you develop healthy coping strategies so that when negative thoughts arise, you can use them as an opportunity to practice new skills instead of falling into old patterns.
