Counselling for Trauma and PTSD

If you have experienced a traumatic event in your life, you may be feeling afraid, angry, ashamed, sad or guilty. These are normal feelings that most people experience after a traumatic situation occurs. However, if these emotions do not go away or if they interfere with your ability to function normally, counselling may be recommended as one way to help you cope. By exploring how you feel and how the trauma has affected your life, counsellors can provide guidance to help you process and heal from what happened.

Types of Trauma

A traumatic experience is any event that shakes our sense of safety in the world. It can be the aftermath of a war, a car accident, assault, abuse, traumatic injuries, domestic violence, a home invasion, natural disasters, or man-made disasters such as terrorist attacks or school shootings. For police and first responders, it could be a dangerous situation, a violent injury, or disturbing scene. In all cases, the result is similar: we feel scared, helpless, and overwhelmed by the loss of control over our lives.

Complex Trauma

Complex trauma occurs over a long period of time and is caused by experiencing multiple forms of abuse or neglect. Complex traumas often result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may lead to issues with anxiety, depression, trust, self-esteem, and relationships with others.

Veterans & Military

Veterans and military service people are often exposed to traumatic situations during combat and war. The effects of these situations can be devastating and long-lasting, including PTSD, impulse control issues, and depression. It is important to get help to regain control and recover.

RCMP & First Responders

RCMP officers and first responders are the first on the scene when there is an emergency. This means they are often exposed to scary, dangerous, disturbing, and traumatic situations that can cause them to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Medical Staff

Traumatic injuries can be extremely upsetting to medical professionals, who are often required to work with severely injured patients even when they don't believe they will survive. After witnessing such traumatic incidents, many find it difficult to cope and return back to normal life.

Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma is a type of trauma that occurs while a person is still growing up and can have long term effects on the way the brain develops and functions. It can include abuse at home, neglect from parents or guardians, or bullying at school. It can affect how a person sees themselves and the world around them.

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a form of abuse that affects millions of people every year. Domestic violence refers to any form of sexual, physical, emotional or financial abuse within an intimate or parent-child relationship. It can cause PTSD, depression, anxiety, and trust issues for survivors who experience it regularly.

Medical Trauma

Medical trauma involves trauma caused by any kind of injury that results in psychological or physical distress during the experience of getting sick, being injured or receiving treatment in an ambulance or hospital. Medical traumas can be physically painful and emotionally traumatic with long term consequences.
seasonal affective depression

Sexual Trauma

Sexual trauma is caused by any unwanted or coerced sexual experience. People who have experienced this trauma can have feelings of confusion, shock, shame, fear and guilt that may last for years after the event took place. Survivors of sexual trauma often feel isolated and alone, which can lead to anxiety and depression.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that can develop after you've experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It's normal to feel stressed, upset, angry, guilty and sad after a traumatic experience. But these feelings are usually short-lived and pass over time. If your symptoms last for more than four weeks after the traumatic event, you may have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
How Can Counselling Help?
Counselling supports people who have experienced trauma by helping them understand what they are feeling and why they are feeling it; identifying triggers that cause their symptoms to flare up; developing coping strategies; learning how to manage their emotions more effectively; and finding ways to build trust with others again after being betrayed by someone close to them during the traumatic event.

Trauma Informed Therapy

Trauma informed therapy uses an understanding of how trauma affects the individual to help them regulate their emotions, behaviours & reactions to stress.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
